Thata Payaru masiyal (Mashed Cow peas)

Today...I woke up as usual and went to kitchen to check what I can make for lunch and found that i am running out of veggies. We have a small vegetable patch at home out of which we get a good supply of tomato, okra, peerkangai and pavakai....As the patch is small we didnt sow a lot of variety..but will do it definitely next year as we just set up a patch last week...a bigger one for next year !!!

So...here I am...gazing at the fridge as to what to cook...and then get the idea of the easy recipe..thata payaru masiyal...Easy to prepare..healthy to eat....and ofcourse Tasty too...!!!

Ingredients :

Onion - 1 chopped fine
Tomato - 1 chopped fine
Thata payaru - 1 cup
Red chillies - 4-5
Curry leaves - 4-5
Garlic - 2-3

Heat the cooker and saute some mustard and chana dal...Then add the onion and red chillies and saute, until the onion changes color. Add the garlic, thata payaru and water. The measurement is 1.5 cups for 1 cup of payaru. Add the curry leaves, a spoon of turmeric powder and salt according to taste.
Close the cooker and simmer it... Allow for 4-5 whistles....Open it and try to mash one payaru with your fingers..if it mashes easily ..you are good...else allow another 4-5 whistles until they soften...

Once they are done...add hot water (about 1/2 cup ..in little quantities...), stir it and bring it to a curry consistency.

PS: If you pre-plan to make this masiyal..its good to soak the thata payaru overnight...they cook very fast...

Try it and let me know how it goes...!!!
